The Ōtorohanga Court house: Originally opened in 1913. It was later scheduled for demolition in 1974. So a group of passionate people came together, determined to save the historic building. They raised $100 to buy the Courthouse. And then went on to raised the funds required to transport the building to it’s current site on Kākāmutu Road.
The Ōtorohanga Historical Society Inc was established in October 1974 and the Museum opened it’s doors.
The Ōtorohanga Museum is the guardian of our historical treasures, genealogical records and social history.
The Ōtorohanga Museum complex now consists of a number of historic buildings including - an 1896 Police Lockup and Police Office, 1908 (de-sanctioned) Church, along with the 1913 Courthouse. The Museum’s only contemporary building, ‘Te Waonui o Tāne’ houses a 13 Meter long partially built totara waka. Its a much loved unique exhibit.
The museum is definitely worth a visit.
Our mission is to protect valued taonga (treasures) and unique local histories in a safe environment. It is a place where the community’s history is preserved and accessible to everyone.
